Stirling's disastrous parachute jump leaves him unable to walk due to serious injuries to his spine, while Lewes receives news that could end their experiment before it even gets off the ground - he is being sent back to Tobruk and Paddy Mayne is headed for the Far East. While recovering in hospital, Stirling ruminates on Lewes' plan to attack the enemy from behind and hatches a plan to get approval for their unit from General Auchinleck at GHQ.
