I'mdifficult (Chinese: 我是機車少女; pinyin: Wǒ Shì Jīchē Shàonǚ) is a Taiwanese experimental pop band formed in Taipei in 2018. The quartet is known for their genre-blending sound, which incorporates elements of indie pop, R&B, and kinetic lo-fi beats, as well as their bilingual lyrics that fluidly alternate between English and Mandarin.
I'mdifficult's music is characterized by a "dreamy" and cinematic atmosphere. Critics have noted their unique approach to songwriting, which often lacks traditional verse-chorus structures in favor of linear musical narratives. Their lyrics reflect the multicultural background of the members, seamlessly mixing Mandarin and English to explore themes of youth, identity, and urban life in Taipei.
The band was formed in 2018 by four childhood friends who grew up traveling between Taiwan and the United States. Their name, I'mdifficult, is a play on the Taiwanese slang term "Jīchē" (機車), which literally means "scooter" but is colloquial slang for someone who is picky, annoying, or "difficult."
They began releasing demos and singles independently, gaining traction in the Taiwanese indie scene. In March 2021, the band released their breakout EP, "25," which received critical acclaim for its mature soundscapes and emotional depth.
On November 10, 2023, I'mdifficult released their self-titled debut studio album, I'mdifficult. The album marked a significant evolution in their style, featuring a more polished, cinematic production while retaining their experimental roots.
